KAKAMEGA TO NAIROBI PEACEWALK
ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
With the 2022 elections fast-approaching, a wind of political agitation is sweeping over the country causing so much tension and extending adverse effects on national cohesion. This situation underpins the need to have communities sensitized on the need for peace especially during this period in which most politicians take advantage and bank on peoples’ emotions to gain selfish political mileage and self-gain. It is on this position that Peace Ambassadors Integration Organization (PAMBIO) premised the need to have an extensive outreach activity aimed directly at the community with a view of promoting national cohesion, integration and a conscious spirit of nationhood (patriotism).
The Kakamega-Nairobi Peace Walk will transverse Five regions ie Western, Nyanza, Rift Valley, Central and Nairobi, and a total of Twelve Counties with the aim of ensuring that both young people, men and women alike, who will engage in the August General elections whether as voters or aspirants will also be actively involved in violence prevention and cohesion promotion. Six of the Twelve counties have a history of communal violence during electioneering periods. They include Kisumu, Kericho, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Laikipia and Nairobi Counties.
The focus on young people and women is informed by;
1) Their significant numbers which can substantially affect the way communities engage in electoral processes;
2) Their ability to engage in conflict prevention;
3) Their active participation in causing harm during violence periods (the young people).
The 21-days Peace Walk will bring together 1200 volunteers and will hold community peace barazas with a focus on active non-violence, conflict analysis, conflict prevention, lobbying and advocacy and conflict management. The volunteers will be responsible for lobbying locals to engage in activities and talks aimed at maintaining law and order (as identified by the locals during the ground visits), conducting simple conflict mapping of their areas in light of the elections and mobilizing groups to take part in the proposed peace walk. There will be local people, conversant with the local languages and residents of the target areas so that whenever possible the local people can access them for information.
